Hey Friends, It’s Spring — Let’s Talk Outdoor Clean-Up!
Hey there! So tell me — have you stepped outside lately and felt that finally-it’s-spring kind of vibe? OK, OK, if you live in Maine like I do, then you have gotten some snow recently. I don’t know about you, but when the sun is shining it is practically begging me to get outside and give my yard some love.
This time of year always feels like the perfect reset button. The snow's gone (hopefully), the days are getting longer, and it’s like our homes are just waiting to wake up and show off a little. So I figured I'd share my spring clean-up checklist with you — you know, in case you're staring at your backyard like, where do I even start?
1. Garden Glow-Up
First thing’s first — the garden. Even if it’s still early in the season, it’s the perfect time to clear out old leaves and dead stems, loosen up the soil, and maybe even throw in some fresh compost. You never know what you might find popping up under those leaves. I like to map out what I want to plant this year — I mainly have perinerials, but also have a vegetable garden. I like to think about what we liked last year and what we want to try this year.
2. Gutters (Ugh, I Know)
Okay, I’ll be honest — cleaning gutters isn’t exactly glamorous, but it’s necessary. Leaves, twigs, who knows what else — they all pile up and clog things up. I learned the hard way that ignoring them means water going exactly where it shouldn’t. Better to get ahead of it now.
3. Deck Check
Your deck probably took a beating over the winter. A good scrub (or a power wash if you're feeling fancy) can do wonders. I always look for loose nails or boards that need re-securing, and maybe touch up the stain. That way it’s ready for all those grill nights and lazy afternoons. Adding some outdoor lights always makes it just a little more cozy.
4. Yard TLC
The lawn usually looks a little... meh... after winter. Raking out old grass, seeding bare patches, and giving it the first mow of the season really perks things up. And if you’ve got a dog or dogs, like me, spring’s also the season of cleaning up the “landmines” they left behind. Glamorous, I know.
5. Tree Time
Don’t forget about your trees and shrubs! I like to walk around and trim back any broken or overgrown branches. It keeps things neat and helps them grow better — plus, it prevents them from crashing down unexpectedly during a storm.
6. Driveway Detail
The driveway deserves some attention too. Sweep away debris, check for cracks, and give it a good rinse. Sometimes a little pressure washing makes it look brand new. And honestly, that little bit of effort can make a big difference in how the whole house looks.
7. Spring Curb Appeal
Now we’re getting to the fun part — curb appeal. Whether it’s swapping out your front door mat, adding a pop of color with a flower pot, or just putting out some clean outdoor furniture, little touches go a long way. This would also be the time on a warm dry day to give your front door paint a little touch up. I always love pulling up to the house and seeing it looking fresh and full of life again.
I’m tackling mine bit by bit when the weather allows, but it’s honestly kind of fun — like the house is stretching and waking up after a long nap. If you need help or just want to swap garden plans, shoot me an email @ [email protected]
