If you're feeling overwhelmed by your closet, you're not alone. A cluttered wardrobe can be a major source of stress, but the good news is that it doesn’t take much to transform it into an organized, functional space. In fact, tackling your clothing closet is often the most rewarding part of the decluttering process. Ready to dive in? Let’s get started!

Step 1: Take Stock of What Fits

The first thing to consider when decluttering your wardrobe is whether your clothes actually fit. We’ve all been there — holding onto a pair of jeans or a dress “just in case” we lose a few pounds or gain some muscle. But the reality is that if it doesn't fit right now, it likely won’t fit anytime soon. Don’t keep clothes that are too big or too small. Not only do they take up valuable closet space, but they also serve as constant reminders of what doesn’t work for your body right now.

Too Big? Don’t Keep It.

It's easy to think, "Well, maybe I’ll wear this when I gain weight." But clothes that are too large can feel unflattering and never quite right. Let go of these items. They’re just taking up space and keeping you from wearing the clothes that actually fit you well.

Too Small? Don’t Keep It Either.

On the flip side, clothes that are too small serve a similar purpose — they linger in your closet as an unrealistic goal. Instead of holding onto them for the "what if" moments, let go and embrace what fits comfortably now.

Haven’t Worn It In Ages? Time to Say Goodbye.

There are always a few items that seem to make their way to the back of your closet and get buried under everything else. Maybe they were trendy a few years ago or were a gift you never quite warmed up to. If you haven't worn something in a year or more, it’s time to part ways. If it doesn’t serve you now, it likely never will.

Step 2: Donate to Help Others

Once you've sorted through what no longer serves you, it’s time to find your items a new home. Donating your gently used clothing is a great way to give back to your community and help those in need.

If you're located in the Portland, Maine area, here are a few local organizations where you can donate your clothes:

  1. Maine Needs
A wonderful local organization that provides essential items to those experiencing homelessness in Cumberland County. Your clothing donations can help those who are struggling get back on their feet. Learn more and donate here: Maine Needs

  2. Preble Street
Preble Street works to prevent and alleviate hunger and homelessness for individuals and families throughout Maine. They accept in-kind donations, including clothing, to help those in need. More details can be found on their donation page: Preble Street Donations

  3. Catholic Charities Maine Thrift Store
Catholic Charities Maine is a well-established organization serving the people of Maine. They accept donations of gently used clothing for resale in their thrift stores, with all proceeds going toward their programs. Check out how you can donate here: Catholic Charities Donations

Step 3: If You’re Not in the Portland Area, No Problem!

Even if you're not near Portland, Maine, there are plenty of places where you can donate your clothes. A quick Google search will reveal local donation centers, shelters, or charity shops near you. Many cities have similar organizations that help those in need, so you’ll easily find a place where your items can make a difference.

Final Thoughts

Decluttering your closet isn’t just about creating more space in your home. It’s about creating a space that’s filled with items that make you feel good and support the life you want to live. By letting go of clothes that no longer serve you and donating them to those in need, you’re not only improving your own space, but you're also helping others in the process.  Stay tuned in March for Part 3!

Happy decluttering!
