June is Pride Month—a time to celebrate, honor, and recognize the contributions, resilience, and history of LGBTQ+ individuals and communities.

Maine’s story has always been one of independence, perseverance, and looking out for one another. From quaint New England villages and farming communities to our bustling coastal towns and vibrant cities, Maine has long been shaped by people who value authenticity, hard work, and community.

The journey toward equality in Maine has seen many milestones. In 2005, Maine enacted protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation. In 2012, Maine became one of the first states in the nation where voters approved marriage equality at the ballot box, demonstrating a commitment to fairness and inclusion through the democratic process.

Today, Pride celebrations can be found throughout the state, bringing communities together to celebrate diversity, visibility, and belonging. Some of Maine's largest Pride events include:

Portland Pride
One of the state's largest Pride celebrations, featuring a parade, festival, live entertainment, community organizations, and events throughout June.

Ogunquit Pride
A weeklong celebration in one of Maine's most welcoming coastal communities, featuring social gatherings, entertainment, and local events.

Augusta Pride
One of Central Maine's largest Pride celebrations, Augusta Pride brings together community members from across the region for a day of connection, visibility, and celebration at the Augusta Exchange Fairgrounds.

Bangor Pride
Serving central and northern Maine, Bangor Pride continues to grow each year with events that celebrate LGBTQ+ individuals and strengthen community connections.

These events are opportunities not only to celebrate LGBTQ+ individuals, but also to recognize the friends, families, neighbors, and allies who help make Maine's communities stronger.

At its heart, Pride Month is about belonging. It’s about creating communities where people feel safe, respected, and valued for who they are. Those ideals align closely with the qualities many Mainers hold dear: kindness, acceptance, resilience, and a willingness to lend a hand to a neighbor.

As we enjoy the beauty of a Maine summer—longer days, local events, and time spent with family and friends—Pride Month serves as a reminder that our communities are strongest when everyone feels welcome.

Happy Pride Month, Maine. Here’s to celebrating diversity, fostering connection, and continuing to build communities where everyone can feel at home.
