For my first installment of local hikes, I wanted to introduce Bradley Pond Farm in Topsham! Bradley Pond is the headwater of the Cathance River, one of six rivers that flow into Merrymeeting Bay. The property is a large conservation easement that was created in 1991 and is home to a couple of miles of trails that are easy to moderate and ideal for a casual hike or snowshoeing in the winter.
I chose this trail system because it is just a short walk from my front door. The property was closed in late 2020 due to COVID. This was a bummer, for me especially, as I was using it nearly every day! Luckily, the closure allowed for the Brunswick Topsham Land Trust to re-route trails and rebuild several bridges throughout the trail network. I had the opportunity to volunteer some time to help out with this effort. It gave me a better appreciation for the work that local land trusts do for our communities.
The property opened back up in 2022 and I have been using it since. I highly recommend packing a lunch and enjoying the sun in the open fields on a nice, warm day this spring!!
