Hiking in Maine

  • 06/19/23
About 5 minutes from downtown Freeport, Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park has a small network of trails through woods and down to the waters of Casco Bay.  All of the trails are easy to moderate in difficulty and the entire park can be explored in an afternoon.  My favorite activity here is hiking down to the water at low tide.

Along the trail, there is an interpretive display detailing the park’s most well-known inhabitant, the Osprey.  As you reach the water, you can see Googin’s Island, which is an Osprey Sanctuary.  Often, a nest and Osprey are visible.  At low tide, a small beach appears, and the shoreline is excellent for kids playing and exploring the tidepools.  I highly recommend going around low tide!

On the way home, be sure to check out Mast Landing’s Freeport location or stop in at Wilbur’s of Maine Chocolate for a tour of their factory!
